Student SafetyWe have a great number of students (and their families) who walk and bike to school. Please make sure you are driving slowly and adhering to the parking signs around the school. Also, the roundabout is for drop off only. Drivers must stay in their cars. Finally, the Staff parking lot is to be used by staff only. All of these measures are to keep our school community safe. Basketball CampsGrit Sports is offering Club basketball teams for both girls and boys for the Fall and Winter of 2024. The following teams will be offered:
· U14: Fall (Sept 17 – Nov 23) – REGISTER HERE (U14) · U13: Winter (early Nov – Feb 23) – REGISTER HERE (U13) · U12: Winter (early Nov – Feb 23) – REGISTER HERE (U12) Fall Club Team Information & Registration The club team will be an opportunity for student athletes to prepare and improve on their fundamentals prior to upcoming Winter High School Basketball Tryouts. The emphasis will be on skill development and transferable skills that can be applied to various sports. Our goal is to promote the sport of basketball but as well to promote physical literacy so athletes can be physically active for life. Players will have the opportunity to play against other up-and-coming high school players throughout the lower mainland. Players will have to try out on the dates below and be selected for the club team. There will be a potential for a second team at this age level. If you are interested, please complete the google form. Once the form is complete and payment ($15) is received for tryout, your spot will be reserved for a tryout. Information will be sent to your email regarding try out date and time. Please see below for more information: · Tryout Cost $15 · Tryout Dates: Tuesday September 17th & Thursday September 19 (Time/Place: TBD) · Games: 9 game season on either Saturday or Sunday beginning September 28/29 until November 23/24 (1 Game per week). Schedule will be finalized in late August/Early September. · Practices: 1x per week (Either Tuesday or Thursdays 430pm or 5pm – 1.5 hours) · Location: Practices in the South Delta area and games throughout Lower Mainland. Exactly locations for games have not been determined but may include New Westminster Secondary, SFU, Capilano University, Pacific Academy · Season Cost: ($750) U13 & U12 (REGISTRATION LINK BELOW) · Tryout Cost $15 · Tryout Dates: (Time/Place: TBD) · Games: 13 game season on either Saturday or Sunday beginning early November until end of February. (1 Game per week). Schedule will be finalized in October · Practices: 1x per week (Either Tuesday or Thursdays 430pm or 5pm – 1.5 hours) · Location: Practices in the South Delta area and games throughout Lower Mainland. Exactly locations for games have not been determined but may include New West high school, SFU, Capilano University, Pacific Academy · Season Cost: ($900) COACHES: The teams will be coached by both Carol Lingham & Bryan Lopez. Bryan Lopez is a Physical Health Education teacher and coached the Senior Boys Basketball team over the last four years at South Delta Secondary. Prior to South Delta, Bryan coached at John Oliver Secondary in Vancouver. He has nearly a decade of experience as a Personal Trainer working with a variety of clientele ranging from University Varsity athletes to the General Population. Carol Lingham is a Physical Health Education teacher and has taught and coached in the district over the past 25 years. She has served as Athletic Director at South Delta Secondary over the past 14 years. Carol coached the senior boys basketball team with Bryan and had the opportunity to attend prestige tournaments throughout the lower mainland. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend tournaments in Phoenix (2022) & Hawaii (2023). Upcoming Events at the Fraser Valley Regional Library (Tsawwassen Branch)Family Games Night Tuesdays, September 3 – December 17, 6 pm – 7:30 pm – Tsawwassen Library We got game(s)! Bring the family and a friend and join us at the library for an evening of board, card and other games. Playing games is more than just fun. It develops social skills, communication and problem-solving ability. A selection of games will be provided.
Saturday Afternoon Family Craft Saturday, September 7 – December 21, 2 pm – 4 pm – Tsawwassen Library Bring the family to the library for a fun craft! Drop in begins at 2 pm. All supplies provided.
Imagination Station Sunday, September 8 – December 29, 2 pm – 3 pm – Tsawwassen Library We will provide LEGO, KEVA planks, Magformers and more. All you need to bring is your imagination. Test your engineering skills while you build amazing structures. Fun for all ages.
Bat Talk and Walk Tuesday, September 17, 6 pm – 8:30 pm – Tsawwassen Library 6 pm – 7 pm: Library presentation at Tsawwassen Library 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm: Walk at Boundary Bay Regional Park, 12 Avenue/Beach Grove Road lot Bats are very important animals that are feared and misunderstood by many. Come out for a night of adventure. The night will start with a presentation discussing general facts about bats, bat habitat, where the best locations are to watch bats at night, how to minimize a bat encounter if you have bats feeding or roosting on your property, and ways to support and help local bat populations. This presentation will be followed by a stroll through a park where you will be able to watch and hear bats in their natural habitat. During the walk, we will discuss echolocation and how to safely watch bats. Come out for an extraordinary night of bat education and fun. Registration is required. Student Vacations during the School YearPlease understand that teachers are not required to provide study materials/assignments for students who are away on vacation during school days. Students may read everyday, keep a travel journal with facts related to the destination (in full sentences and/or well written paragraphs) and practice math facts (extension: math related word problems).
